The Storyteller entertaining the crowd at Mashatu Game Reserve – where most of the story takes place: the launch of his book Running Wild: The Story of Zulu, an African Stallion.

ON A FAMILY visit to Cape Town good friend, fellow mountain biker and safari lodge owner, Dave Evans remarked "You know, you are really good at this kind of thing. You could make proper money doing it professionally."

And so was born The Storyteller with the launching of his own tour guiding company, Racontours in 2016. The intention was never to offer the pop-in-to-the-highlights-of-the-Mother-City-in-one-day type of excursion sold by just about all other tour operators. Rather, the aim was to curate journeys that delve into the backstories of places, and to open up the bigger picture of this exceptional city and its dramatic mountainous peninsula setting.

In 2020 Covid killed Racontours, but David bounced back as an in-demand specialist guide, working with only with a few select agents. Tours are all spontaneous, depending on the guests' origins, interests and inclinations (and the weather of this climatically fickle town); no two tours are ever the same.
